When every local practice is closed, the fallback becomes the emergency department — a long wait for something a GP could handle in fifteen minutes, and a bed taken from someone with a genuine emergency. Having a medical centre near you that opens on Saturday and Sunday closes that gap.

Weekend GP or Emergency Department? How to Decide
A weekend GP appointment is the right choice for most everyday health problems. Some situations, though, need emergency care rather than general practice.

For chest pain or pressure, difficulty breathing, sudden weakness or trouble speaking, uncontrolled bleeding, a serious injury, or if someone is unconscious or unresponsive. Do not wait for an appointment and do not drive yourself.

Walk In or Book Ahead?
Walk-ins are always welcome at our Surfers Paradise medical centre — you never need an appointment to be seen. That said, booking ahead almost always means a shorter wait, and Saturday mornings are our busiest window of the week. A booked slot later in the day is usually quicker than walking in at 8:30am on a Saturday.

What to Bring to a Weekend Appointment
A few minutes of preparation makes the consultation far more useful, particularly if you are seeing one of our GPs for the first time:
- Your Medicare card, or your health insurance or OSHC details if you do not hold Medicare
- A list of your current medications, including doses, plus anything you buy over the counter
- Any allergies to medication
- Recent test results, scans or hospital letters if you have them
- Your regular GP’s name and practice, so we can send a summary back to them
- For children, the blue book and immunisation record
Visiting the Gold Coast Without Medicare?
Surfers Paradise sees visitors from all over the world, and getting sick away from home is stressful enough without the added worry of how you will be seen. If you do not hold a Medicare card, you are still very welcome here — you can simply book a private appointment and pay the consultation fee.
If you are an international student or a visitor with health cover, we accept the major providers including Bupa, Medibank, Allianz, ahm, nib and CBHS, along with OSHC policies. Bring your policy details and membership number with you and our reception team will talk you through what your cover includes. Interstate visitors with an Australian Medicare card are treated exactly the same as local patients — you do not need to be an existing patient of the clinic.
Female GPs Available on Weekends
Some things are easier to talk about with a female doctor, and you should never have to put off an appointment because of it. We have female GPs available at our Surfers Paradise clinic on weekends as well as weekdays, and you are welcome to request a female doctor when you book — just let reception know, or select your preferred doctor when you book online.

This matters most for women’s health appointments — cervical screening, contraception advice, pregnancy and menopause care, breast checks and sexual health — but it applies to anything at all. Availability varies by day, so if you have a preference it is worth booking ahead rather than walking in.
Onsite Pathology — Open Weekend Mornings
A practical advantage of seeing a GP here on a weekend is that if your doctor orders blood tests or swabs, you can have them collected before you leave the building. Our onsite pathology collection centre, run by Australian Clinical Labs, is open Saturday and Sunday from 8:00am to 12:00pm as well as through the week.
No second trip, no separate appointment, and results moving sooner. Routine weekend collections include blood tests, STI screening, cervical screening samples and allergy testing.
One thing worth planning: pathology closes at midday on weekends while the clinic runs until 5:00pm. If you are likely to need a fasting blood test, book an early morning appointment so you are seen and collected in time. Ask your GP to confirm when they write the request.
An Onsite Compounding Pharmacy, Also Open 7 Days
If your consultation ends with a prescription, you will not be hunting for somewhere open. Paradise Compounding Pharmacy is inside the same building as the clinic at Piazza 16, and is open seven days a week — Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm, Saturday and Sunday 8:30am to 5:00pm. You can walk from your appointment to the dispensary in under a minute.
As a compounding pharmacy they can also prepare medicines individually where an off-the-shelf product does not fit, and they deliver Australia-wide if you are heading home interstate. Weekend Illness in Children
Children have a habit of spiking a temperature on a Saturday night. Most childhood illness is viral and settles on its own, but a weekend GP appointment is worth booking when a fever lasts more than a couple of days, when an earache is stopping your child sleeping, when a rash appears alongside a fever, or when a cough is disturbing their breathing rather than just their sleep.
Trust your instincts as a parent. If your child is drowsy, floppy, refusing fluids, breathing quickly or not passing urine, that is an emergency — call 000 or go straight to the nearest emergency department rather than waiting for a GP slot. For everything short of that, we can see them seven days a week, and we handle childhood immunisations on weekends too, which is useful if weekday appointments never quite work around school.
Seasonal Health on the Gold Coast
Our weekends look different depending on the time of year, and knowing what is coming helps you plan.
Winter (June to August) is the peak of the Australian respiratory illness season, and weekend appointments book out fastest in these months. Book early in the day, do not sit on a cough lasting more than three weeks or one that comes with fever or breathlessness, ask which seasonal vaccinations you are eligible for, and get chronic conditions reviewed before the cold weather arrives — asthma, heart and lung conditions all flare when temperatures drop.
Summer (December to February) brings a completely different list: sunburn and heat exhaustion, marine stings, coral and reef cuts that turn into infections, surf and scooter injuries, and insect bites. Skin damage accumulated over a Queensland summer is also the reason regular skin cancer checks matter so much on this coast.

Bulk Billing and Costs
We are a bulk billing doctor in Surfers Paradise, and bulk billing is available for eligible patients holding a valid Medicare card.
